Phantom Soldier

How it works

Four steps. You tell it your way, we write it with you, and it goes out under one name, never yours.

Why songs

Bottom line up front

Veterans have stories that don't survive translation. On paper they read like a report. Out loud they stop a room, so we mostly keep them to ourselves. A song can carry one the whole distance. You bring the truth. We handle the words, the music, and the release.

Most of us have one story we've told maybe twice, and a dozen we've never told at all. There's no good moment for them: too heavy for a cookout, too plain for a ceremony. So this is the moment. Any branch, any era, any job you held. If it becomes a song, it's for you and for the veterans who'll hear themselves in it.

Fair warning: this is niche music on purpose. It isn't built to go viral. It's built for you.

The four steps

  1. You tell the story

A paragraph is enough to start. It doesn't need to be polished or in order.

  2. A real person writes you back

Same person the whole way through. If something's unclear, we ask. If you'd rather stop after we talk, nothing gets written.

  3. Words first, then the song

You read every line and push back until it's right. Then Suno records exactly those words. Words first, always.

  4. It goes out under one name

Released as Phantom Soldier, with a permanent home on this site. Sometimes two or three veterans' stories get woven into one song so it reaches more of us. Your name isn't on it either way.

Not every story becomes a song. That's about pace, not quality. This grows slowly on purpose.

Tell your story

Nobody gets paid for these songs

Phantom Soldier runs on a non-profit basis, and 501(c)(3) status is in progress. Whatever the music earns, streams, sales, any of it, is donated to veteran suicide prevention. That happens automatically, not as a pledge somebody has to remember. Veterans are never charged a dime.

Straight talk on scale: streaming pays fractions of a cent, so right now the number is small. The commitment doesn't change with the size of the check. If a song puts a phone number in front of one person on a night they needed it, the record did its job.

The fine print

Written so it can actually be read. It is not legal advice and it is not a contract.

What happens to your story
  • You tell it the way you want it told, and you see the words before anything is recorded.
  • Some songs weave two or three veterans' stories together so more people can see themselves in it. If yours is one of them, you'll know.
  • Every song that goes public is released under one name, Phantom Soldier. No veteran's name is ever attached, and details that would identify you are left out.
  • Until the words are final, you can pull your story back, no reason required.
  • Your contact information is never published or sold. It's used to reach you about your story, nothing else.
What makes a story easy to write from

You don't have to write well. That part is on us. What helps is detail, the small specific things that make a moment real instead of general.

  • One moment beats a whole deployment. The hour, the conversation, the drive back.
  • If the song is for somebody, tell us who they were. A lot of these stories belong to someone who isn't here anymore.
  • Include the thing that stuck. A smell, a song on the radio, a phrase somebody used. That's usually where the song is hiding.
  • It doesn't have to be combat. Coming home is a story. So is a good chief, a bad year, or the day you took the uniform off for the last time.

Two hard limits: nothing classified, and no details that identify someone who hasn't agreed to be in it. Not sure if something crosses a line? Leave it out and say so. We'll write around the gap.

How the songs are made

Full disclosure: these songs are made with AI. The lyrics are drafted with AI's help, from your story and your corrections, and the music is produced with Suno. The stories are real, and a real person works with you from start to finish. Nothing is recorded until you've approved every word.

Not medical, legal, or clinical care

Phantom Soldier is a storytelling and music project built on lived veteran experience. It is not therapy, and nothing here has been reviewed by a doctor or a clinician. None of it is a substitute for care. Writing about service can bring hard things up. Go at whatever pace is yours, and if you need support, the Veterans Crisis Line is staffed around the clock: dial 988, then press 1, or text 838255.

Non-profit status

Phantom Soldier is not yet a registered 501(c)(3). It operates on a non-profit basis and is not currently soliciting donations; contributions are not tax-deductible. Support the project by streaming the music and sending it to a veteran who needs it.
